Viewer-ship
– a ship from which
to view
My work weaves
together neuro-perception (how
the chemistry and physiology
of the body effects how we see),
folk and indigenous pharmacology
(mysticism and medicine) and
optical hybrids of abstraction
and figuration.
Spaces are constructed for synesthetic
practice and play – there
is a necessity to exclude the
view of the external world to
concentrate the activities of
the mind. Smell and taste summons
poisonous or antidotal travel
where natural and synthetic
are indistinguishable. Constructed
realms are embedded with hidden
space packed with inner and
outer potentials, seeking and
offering fulfillment.
I revisit the architectures
I have shaped and re-shapen,
a cyclical mode of transformation.
Optical movement designates
a perceptually located duration
of play. Within fields of black
and white, oppositions break
down to many shades of grey.
Hierarchal relationships are
de-stabilized through reversals
of figure/ground. What we think
we know about a form departs
from our experience of it. Constructs
offer a break from the literal
to examine structures that breath
out from the drawing surface
and encompass the body in evocative
space.
